IN BRIEF Once known as Waubs¨ Harbour, the name is thought to have originated from an Aboriginal woman, Waubedebar, a sealer¨s wife who rescued her husband and another sealer during a storm, thus becoming well-known throughout the area.

The town was renamed by Lieut. Governor Denison after James Bicheno, the Colonial Secretary.

Whalers and sealers frequented the area until the late 1840¨s and Waubs¨ Harbour was an established whaling station.

Coal was discovered in the area in 1848, but mismanagement caused their closure ten years later.

Today Bicheno is a prime holiday destination with a fishing fleet mostly involved with cray fishing.
