IN BRIEF The first recorded visit by a European was in 1798 when the area was surveyed by George Bass and Matthew Flinders.

The first allocation of land in the district was made in 1833 to Janet and Andrew Anderson. Another early settler, Peter Brewer, built ‚Bowoodç in 1839. The home, near Bridport, is open on special occasions.

Bridport is now a popular holiday destination and fishing port overlooking Anderson Bay (named for Andrew Anderson). Its fishing fleet contributes significantly to the fishing industry.

Because of its situation, Bridport is used as a base to see the north-east of the state. If you want to do this, allow three days for your visit.
