IN BRIEF Coles Bay sits at the foot of granite mountains called The Hazards, and on the edge of Freycinet National Park.

Coles Bay was named for Silas Cole who produced lime by burning oyster shell obtained from the many Aboriginal middens. This was shippped to Swansea where it was used on some of the early buildings.

Aboriginal people used the area extensively through winter as the climate is mild. Lasting reminders are middens (remains of shell and bone left-overs from meals shared over thousands of years).

Europeans arrived early last century as whalers; the Chinese also arrived last century to work the alluvial tin deposits in many of the areaçs creek beds.

Coles Bay is now a holiday destination.
