Derby was the largest open cut tin mine in the Southern Hemisphere, with
a population if over three thousand. The mine closed at the end of world
war two.
The face of the open cut is still visible from the town and the workings have left a
beautiful lake which can be used for most water sports.
In 1929 the Briseis dam which supplied the water to work the mine burst causing the death
of fourteen people.
Today the main source of revenue for the business houses is tourism. Derby is situated
on the Tasman Highway between Scottsdale and St Helens. It has a Mining Museum, craft,
antique, woodwork, coffee and pizza shop plus two hotels. A park offering free camping
is available on the river bank, the river is abundant with fish and four wheel drive
tours can be arranged for the area. Derby is great for nature activities like
bushwalking, bird watching etc.
