IN BRIEF Dunalley used to be called East Bay Neck. It was on the coast near here that the first white men landed when sailors from the Dutch ships âHeemskirk and âZeehan commanded by Abel Janszoon Tasman, discoverer of the island, came ashore.

During convict times, it was the most southerly military post of the "Black Line", an infamous part of Tasmanian history, when Aborigines were deliberately driven from the settled districts and into Tasman Peninsula.

A swing bridge across the man-made Denison Canal allows boats to pass to and from the East Coast. The canal was built in 1902 using bullock teams and a small loco engine to cart the dirt away.
