| Located 50 km north of Launceston at the mouth of the Tamar River, the George Town
Municipality offers visitors an exciting and contrasting variety of experiences and
activities.
The George Town experience begins at the rural hamlet of Hillwood, 30 km north of
Launceston. Hillwood is an ideal spot to sample some local fruit and cheeses, or to
have a spot of lunch at one of the hamlet°s al fresco eating houses.
From Hillwood it is a short drive to historic George Town, Australia°s third oldest
town. When you arrive, collect a Discovery Trail brochure at the visitor centre and
wander around the town. Take the time to visit the historic property, The Grove.
Historic Low Head (just five minutes drive north of George Town) is Australia°s best
preserved maritime precinct. Here you will find the Low Head Pilot Station, where
pilots and boat crews go about duties dating back centuries, and Maritime Museum. The
precinct also contains the Low Head Fairy Penguin Colony, where guided tours at sunset
run from November to March. Low Head is also a great spot for a swim with safe swimming
and surf beaches.
Forty minutes from Low Head is the premium grape-growing region of Pipers Brook. Take
the wine route and sample some of the region°s nationally acclaimed wines.
