IN BRIEF Situated on the banks of the Clyde River (once called Fat Doe River).

Originally called Sorrell Plains by Governor Macquarie; later known as Macquarie and Lower Clyde, the town of Hamilton was eventually named by Governor Arthur in 1824.

The first settlers arrived in the area shortly after New Norfolk was settled in 1807. By 1844 Hamilton was a bustling country town. During the 1860's hop farming was prevalent.
