IN BRIEF Koonya, situated on the shores of Norfolk Bay, was once an important convict outpost known as the Cascades Probation Station, which operated between 1843 and 1846. The station consisted of barracks, officersÁ cottages, two stores, two mess rooms, cookhouse, bakehouse and solitary cells for 12 prisoners. Over 400 convicts were kept here; at least one quarter worked in chains.

Cascades was, initially, an agricultural station; later it produced sawn timber. A steam engine was used to cart timber from the mill to the jetty for shipment.
