TOWNSHIP Launceston, one of AustraliaÁs oldest cities is situated in the picturesque Tamar Valley in the north of Tasmania. In Launceston youÁll discover an atmosphere that sets us apart from other cities. From its earliest days, the town was characterised by an enthusiasm and civic pride that is still evident today. At every turn in the city centre youÁre met by magnificent Victorian streetscapes, lovingly maintained and still in use.

At LauncestonÁs heart is the spectacular Cataract Gorge Reserve, a piece of wilderness just a 15-minute walk from the city centre. It is a place of great beauty, mixing gracious Victorian gardens with natural Australian bushland. Here youÁll find tearooms, exotic plants, peacocks and magnificent leisurely walking trails that were carved out of the cliffs more than 100 years ago.

Browsing around Launceston Central City is also an experience not to be missed. YouÁll find everything from large national department stores to small, exclusive boutiques specialising in hand-made Tasmanian products. ItÁs delightful to wander among the many arcades and malls, or to call into Yorktown Square with its old worlde charm.

From Launceston, so much of Tasmania is within easy reach: the picturesque Tamar Valley - the StateÁs premier wine-growing region, historic villages with craft markets and cottage industries, magnificent coastal beaches, the central highlands and the majestic Cradle Mountain National Park.

Our State has a reputation for hospitality, and our visitors are greeted with genuine warmth. Those who live in this beautiful city are eager to share its lifestyle and to help you fill your visit with a wealth of experiences.
