IN BRIEF Impression Bay Probation Station (now Premaydena) was established in 1841 to grow wheat. The soil was found to unsuitable so only vegetables and hops were produced.

Around 400 convicts were held here, many engaged in the manufacture of wooden products for the Convict Department. Sawn timber was cut for the coal mine.

In latter years Impression Bay became an invalid station housing up to 600 convicts. The station ceased operation in 1857.

Premaydena is situated on the shores of Norfolk Bay.
