| Sorell was settled in 1808 and named after Lt. Governor William Sorell. It soon
became known as the Granary of Australia as large quantities of grain were shipped to
the New South Wales colony.
A railway operated between Bellerive and Sorell between mid-1892 and mid-1926. As
there was no facility for turning locomotives, the train ran in reverse to Bellerive and
was never connected to the main railway network at Hobart. The line was closed due to
operational losses.
Sorell, the centre of a rich agricultural and pastoral district, is the gateway to both
the Tasman Peninsula and the East Coast. |
