IN BRIEF Stanley was established in 1842 and named after Lord Stanley, Secretary of State for the Colonies. The township had been known for 25 years as "the settlement at Circular Head". It is the oldest town on the North West coast. The major industries for Stanley were fine wool and fishing.

Situated at the base of the Nut, Stanley is a popular destination for tourists.
