IN BRIEF Originally known as Great Swanport.

The first settlers arrived in 1821 after sailing up from Hobart Town. A large convict station was established at Rocky Hills, where up to 406 prisoners were kept. A small regiment of soldiers was stationed at Waterloo Point.

Swansea was the administrative centre for the Municipality of Glamorgan (AustraliaĦs oldest rural municipality, founded in 1860) until April 1993 when it merged with Spring Bay (the second oldest rural municipality, founded eight months after Glamorgan) - administration then transferred to Triabunna.

Swansea is an historic seaside town nestled on Great Oyster Bay, and overlooking the Freycinet National Park.

The area produces wool, wine and other croppings.
