IN BRIEF Taranna, situated at the head of Norfolk Bay, is an Aboriginal word meaning kangaroo.

It was here that Australia¨s first railway was built. Covering a distance of almost of 7 km between Lkong Bay and Norfolk Bay, the railway facilitated the transport of passengers and supplies from Hobart. Carriages were pushed up hills by convicts, who then jumped on to go downhill.

Once the only port of debarkation on the Peninsula for passengers proceeding direct by mail coach to Carnarvon (Port Arthur) or Eaglehawk Neck.

Taranna was an important timber producing area.
